One of the improvisation principles which I teach to organisational leaders and beginner stage improvisers is ‘Embrace Uncertainty’. And when it comes to their relationship with uncertainty, those groups may not be as different as you’d first expect.

I was attracted to Matt Watkinson + Csaba Konkoly’s book, Mastering Uncertainty: How to Thrive in an Unpredictable World, which has lots of thought-provoking content. ‘A Failure is something people do, not who they are,’ they propose, for example.

It’s an odd title, though, given that they clearly acknowledge that uncertainty cannot be mastered. In their view, uncertainty can be accepted.

Improvisers go a step further and we propose embracing it. ‘Embrace Uncertainty’ provides the ‘E’ in the LIFEPASS toolset of improvisational principles.

And if that feels a touch to radical for you, when we first introduce it in our leadership programmes and workshops we offer the gentler option of ‘saying hello to it’, to begin an exploration of what happens when we treat the world as uncertain and emergent, rather than fixed, plannable and utterly predictable.

If you are intrigued to learn more about the journey of improvisation and how you can integrate it into your daily life whether professional or social then we’d love for you to join us at our popular “Improv in 6 Acts” course.
