What’s the connection between being ‘in the moment’ and winning?
Here’s a wonderful quote from a sports winner, describing that feeling of being in the moment, the key to skilled improvisation.
“I took so much pleasure from that because afterwards Trevor said, ‘Doc, at no point in the final round did I ever look at the scoreboard or even think about whether I was winning. I was so totally into the present it was the most wonderful feeling.’ It’s hard to do, playing solely in the moment, but this is our quest. It’s beautiful when guys understand the philosophy.”
Yes, the feeling is elusive and usually fleeting, but we can increase of prospects of getting there more often by practicising our skills.
If, for example, you give presentations at work, you can try ditching the script and interacting spontaneously with your audience. Find out what they want and use your store of wisdom to find a great answer on the spot. Risky, perhaps. Exciting, probably. A quest worth pursuing, definitely.
