Yes, you can build skills by putting participants under subtle time pressures. A deadline helps make an activity meaningful – and much more likely to get done. I know this from when I was a journalist. No deadline, no article!

When participants in a training programme improve at a skill, you can often put on a time squeeze to refresh the challenge.

Yet although it’s worth creating a sense of urgency, it’s rare that you need any strict stopwatching. You can say, ‘You’ve only got a couple of minutes to do this’, then allow as much actual time as is needed for most participants to finish.

How do you manage the minutes and handle the hours?
