Are we getting more playful?
There used to be a real divide between those who played computer games and those who didn’t. But, as this clipping reminds us, that barrier melted when games leapt onto our mobile phones. If we remained reluctant to say we played, we’d instead say we were keeping fit or doing brain training.
So play we do. Indeed, paradoxically, as life gets in many ways more serious (you know, the big challenges of politics, society, economics), we are getting more playful.
And that can be a good thing if we take play seriously. As we interact with colleagues to tackle what needs to be done, we can improve our creativity and our collaborative skills, by replacing dull powerpoint-saturated presentations with engaging activities and more productive conversations.
‘Plays well with others’ is increasingly a badge of distinction and an indicator of at least one of the strands of intelligence that will feed our hope of winning the big games ahead.
